M G Sreekumar’s biography

M G Sreekumar in his own words about his musical journey and more....

"As you read about my family, you will realise that music has always flowed through our veins. My father, the late Malabar Gopalan Nair, was a harmonist and a classical vocalist during the post-independence era of the 50s. In those days there were no sophisticated audio or light systems as we have today. As a matter of fact, electricity itself was quite a luxury. For light, the performer would have to use noisy petromax lamps, and also had to sing loudly to reach the ears of thousands. But love for the art of music inspired my father with a commitment that established him as a musician of renown in the circles he moved.

My mother who shared his love for music was also a music teacher who retired in the 60s and is now living with me. My father passed away in Trivandrum in 1973 when I was still quite young, but his life has always been an inspiration for me to achieve the goals I have set for myself, and his passion for the art of music has encouraged me to seek greater perfection in all that I do. My brother, M. G. Radha Krishnan, who works at the Trivandrum chapter of the All India Radio as a Senior Music Director has done more than 100 films in Malayalam. His deep involvement in music has raised him to the level of an internationally famous music director. My sister, Dr.K.Omanakutty, is also no new-comer to this melodious art called music. She obtained her doctorate in Kathakali music in 1985 and has a number of music show-cuts that include artistes like K. S. Chitra, a leading play-back singer in the world of contemporary Malayalam films.

A glimpse into myself.

I personally have had the privilege to sing more than 3000 songs across a number of films in Malayalam, Tamil, Hindi and Telugu. I have had the rare honour of conducting the music direction on many cassettes that include devotional ones for Ayappa, Jesus Christ, and Allah. Parallel to this, I have also done the same for a number of festival-based themes including Onam. Along with these interests, I also have my own cassette company called KMG Music. At the age of 37, I was bestowed the National Award in 1990 for my work in music. This was a crest in my career as it brought to fulfillment a number of aspirations and dreams of my family. Recognition came in other ways too as I won the Kerala state awards in 1989, 90 and 91 also. If you ask me which song established me in my career, definitely it was the song 'Nadroopini' in the Malayalam film 'His Highness Abdulla' This piece elevated my status to that of a singer of National repute. But the proverbial break-through in my career came through the song 'Kanneerpoovite' in the film 'Kiridom' which won me a number of state and private awards, and more importantly be finally taken seriously by the critics. By the grace of God, recently I am once again awarded the National award for the best play back singer for the song Chandu Pottum.. in the film "Vasanthe Lakhsmi Pinne Injanum".I have never yearned for a complicated life. I am quite a simple man at heart who enjoys the purity of life. My ambition is to be remembered by history as a classical vocalist who has contributed something worthwhile to the art of classical music - something that will be cherished for generations of music lovers and enthusiasts.

It was by sheer incident or God's ordinance that Lekha came into my life like a bright morning star.Of course she also hails from a family of music lovers.  Lekha the youngest daughter of Sri.P.Neelakanta Pillai, a senior criminal advocate is born in a prestigous family at Thakkalay (Tamilnadu). Her aesthetic sense for music and culinary arts lies deep down in her manteel and manifests itself where ever she is. In fact she has become the mg and lekhafountain of inspiration to me.Ever since she lit the lamp of my life, awards of different degrees were bestowed on me. I have never been attracted to anyone so much; in her I found out my ideal realized; my soul felt thrilled. I have had to spent days and nights dreaming about  her. Prior to our marriage ten long years had gone by where and when i had to tread through fire and brimstone and lo ! at last in my arms I secured her, my beloved wife,my own sweet heart.

Love excelled, and towered over the wrecks of time, I whisper a prayer that God may beam His light and love upon the path of our life!! "
