About Laxmikant Pyarelal
Music composers at the top of their profession in the 70s and 80s. Composed the two biggest hit songs of the late 80s, Ek do teen (from Tezaab) and the Bachchan number Jumma chumma (from Hum).

Both musicians started as performers in orchestras, becoming arrangers for Hindi film music, which often included ghosting for composers. Laxmikant learnt the violin with Husnlal while Pyarelal learnt music from the Goan music teacher, Anthony Gonsalves (a memory celebrated in his score for Amar Akbar Anthony).

Pyarelal assisted Bulo C. Rani at Ranjit; both assisted Naushad, C. Ramchandra and Kalyanji- Anandji. Their first film as music directors, Parasmani, yielded a major hit, Hansta hua nurani chehra. Broke through with Milan and the Lata Mangeshkar/Mukesh hit, Sawan ka mahina. Real success came in the 70s with their Rajesh Khanna films (Dushman, Hathi Mere Saatbi, Do Raaste) and with Raj Kapoor's Bobby. Since then they have worked on many Manmohan Desai films (Dharam Veer, Naseeb), Shekhar Kapur's Mr India and the film that breathed new life into their career, Tezaab, followed by Hum.

They tend to ascribe their success to their integration of classical Indian and folk rhythms with electronic synthesisers. The lyrics of their songs are frequently written by Anand Bakshi.

Sunny, honey-toned molten gold creating jewels of timeless exquisiteness. That effectively sums up Laxmikant-Pyarelal's musical repertoire that contains timeless melodies like 'Hansta hua noorani chehra'.

Thirty five years ago Laxmikant Shantaram Kudalkar and Pyarelal Ramprasad Sharma were a couple of struggling musicians in the Mumbai film industry. Laxmikant learnt to play the mandolin as a child. Later he became the disciple of Husnlal (of the famous Husnlal-Bhagatram duo) and went on to assist Kalyanji Anandji. The beginning to their joint musical career was made when Pyarelal joined Kalyanji Anandji.

Pyarelal learnt music from his Goan music teacher Anthony Gonsalves. He paid his guru a tribute in the song My name is Anthony Gonzalves in the film Amar Akbar Anthony. He assisted the composer-singer of the 40's, Bulo C. Rani. Both Laxmikant and Payarelal worked under Naushad, C.Ramachandra, Kalyanji-Anandji and R.D. Burman before getting their first independent assignment.

It was the film Parasmani that gave them their first brake in 1963. The Lata Mangeshkar-Kamal Barot duet 'Hansta hua noorani chehra' remained steadfast at the no.1 position of Binaca Geet Mala for weeks. It was the beginning of duo's long-lasting and extremely rewarding association with Lata Mangeshkar.

Laxmikant was once quoted as saying, "Where Didi (Lata Mangeshkar) is concerned I might say that we put in one-anna worth of effort and she turns it into a 16-anna effort". Such was the composing duo's dependence on the vocals of Lata Mangeshkar that they contemplated buying a machine whereby she could sing the female as well as male vocals!

The second turning point in Laxmi-Pyare's career was Dosti in 1964. It fetched the duo their first Filmfare award. The song 'Chahunga mein tujhe' for which singer Mohd. Rafi and lyricist Majrooh won Filmfare awards was to be scrapped from the soundtrack. It was Rafi Saab who insisted that Laxmi-Pyare retain the song and what a momentous decision that was from Dosti where there was no looking back. Scores of silver and golden jubilee musical blockbusters spilled out of recording rooms. From the late Sixties to the end of the Eighties the letters 'L' and 'P' came to stand for the 'long-playing' Laxmikant-Pyarelal.

It is doubtful that any other composer has given so many hit scores and so consistently. Filmmakers like Subodh Mukherjee, Raj Khosla, Manoj Kumar, R.K. Nayyar, J. Om Prakash, L.V. Prasad and Subhash Ghai swore by the music of L-P. The songs composed by the duo were an intrinsic part of director's creative output.

What would J. Om Prakash's Aaye Din Bahar Ke be without the sweetly melodic 'suno sajna'?. V.A. Subba Rao's 'Milan' would be incomplete without 'Sawan ka mahina' as would Raj Khosla's 'Do Raaste' without the coquettish 'Bindiya Chamkegi'. It is difficult to imagine R.K. Nayyar's 'Inteqam' without the sizzling 'Aa-jaan-e-jaa'.

Laxmikant-Pyarelal brought bahaar into so many hit films of the Sixties, Seventies and Eighties that their music came to be considered an essential component for a successful film. L-P delivered truckloads of chartbusters often with one film, unlike today where only a couple of songs from a film go on to become hits.

Bobby had Chabi kho jaye, Jhooth bole kauva kaate, Pyar mein sauda nahin, Mujhe kuch kehna hai, Beshaq mandir masjid todo and Main shayar to nahin. Most L-P admirers felt that the duo had exhausted its creative fuel in Bobby. But six years later they were still the emperors of the charts with Sargam in 1979 and its hit song 'Dafli wale'.

No anthology can do full justice to the unconquered versatality and supreme staying power of Laxmikant-Pyarelal. It would only be in the fairness of things to crown Laxmi-Pyare as the most successful composers of Hindi cinema.

38 years have passed since Lata Mangeshkar and Manna Dey got together to sing 'Tum ganga ke chandrama ho'. Not a single crease has appeared on the shining smooth surface of the song.

Though Lataji gets to sing the creme de la creme like 'Ja re kare badra' and 'Jaane kyon log mohabbat', other singing legends too have had their finest moments. Mukesh's 'Tum bin jeevan kaise beeta', Kishore Kumar's 'Yeh jeevan hai', Mohd. Rafi's 'Aaj mausam bada beimaan hai' and Pankaj Udhas' 'Chithi aayee hai', are songs that music listeners shall hum forever.

As L-P admirers sing.. 'Hum tum yug yug se yeh geet milan ke gaate rahen hain gaate rahenge'...

When Laxmikant-Pya relal's music became a real "STAR" of the film..

There are some films in which the real “STAR” was only Laxmikant-Pyarelal’s music. The following selected, listed films have no Major Star Cast, even some of the films are B Grade and Low Budget but the entire success of the film was carried away by Laxmikant-Pyarelal’s “MAGICAL MUSIC”.

Review of such films and its “Powerful” music by Laxmikant-Pyarelal.

PARASMANI (1963):-

Rousing start by Laxmikant-Pyarelal. Being First Film of LP, they make sure that all the songs are composed as per the standard of early Sixties. The outcome was outstanding. Though the Film “Parasmani” was a mystical film, the film is still remember only because of its immortal songs. LP’s very first film Hit the Box Office despite of being B grade, Black & White, Mystical Film and no major star cast to support. But the main cause of the super success of the film was LP’s SUPER HIT music. Who can forget ?

--Hasta Hua Nurani Chehara… . Lata Mangeshkar-Kamal Barot
--Wo Jab Yaad Aaye Bahot Yaad Aaye. Lata Mangeshkar-Mohammad Rafi
--Ooi Ma Ooi Ma Ye Kya Ho Gaya ... Lata Mangeshkar
--Chori Chori Jo Tumse Mili.... Lata Mangeshkar-Mukesh
--Mere Dil Main Halki See.. Lata Mangeshkar
--Roshan Tumhi Se Duniya.. Mohammad Rafi

DOSTI (1964):-

RAJASHREE FILMS GOT THE FAME FROM THIS FILM. It was Rajashree Films Second Film. Black & White. All the prominent music directors of that time refused to give the music to this film as there was no star cast (two teenage unknown actors) and also they feel there was nothing in the film to compose the songs for Blind and Physically handicap Children. But LP took up the challenge and the film became History. It has won as many as 8 Filmfare Awards + President Award. The film was a great success and the credit goes to Laxmikant-Pyarelal's immortal music. How to use “classical ragas”; make it little simpler to create Mass Appealing and Popular Songs is a best example of “Dosti” songs. Mohammad Rafi was at its best. Laxmikant-Pyarelal’s outstanding music. LP composed majority of the songs in “Pahadi Raag”.

--Chahunga Mian Tuze Sanz Sawere.. Mohammad Rafi
--Mera To Jo Bhi Kadam Hai.. Mohammad Rafi
--Koyi Jab Raah Na Paye.. Mohammad Rafi
--Janewalo Jara Mudake Dekho Muze.. Mohammad Rafi
--Rahi Manawa Dukhati Chinta.. Mohammad Rafi
--Gudiya Hamase Ruthi Rahogi.. Lata Mangeshkar

MR X IN BOMBAY (1964):-

Mystical, non star cast, low budget, Black & White film became super hit only because of LP’s Melodious Music. Kishor Kumar was passing through the lean phase of his carrier but he along with LP produced some of the best songs. Black & White film became super hit only because of LP’s Melodious Music who can forget

--Mere Mehaboob Quyamat Hogi… Kishor Kumar
--Chali Re Chali Re Gori Paniya …. Kishor Kumar-Lata Mangeshkar
--Khoobsurat Haseena Jan-E-Jan-E-Man.. Kishor Kumar-Lata Mangeshkar
--Zulmi Hamare Sawariyan Ho Ram.. Lata Mangeshkar
--Allha Kare Tu Hi Ajaye Lata Mangeshkar

SANT GYANESHWAR (1964):-

A Mythological, Black & White Film, No Star Cast. But Film SUPER HIT ONLY BECAUSE OF HIT MUISC OF LP. Who can forget

--Jyot Se Jyot Jagate Chlo..... Mukesh
--Jyot Se Jyot Jagate Chalo.... Lata Mangeshkar
--Khabar More Na Lee Ni.... Lata Mangeshkar
--Ek Do Teen Chaar...... Lata Mangeshkar

"Jyot Se Jyot Jagate Chalo" can be herd in any Temple and that too in any part of the world.

SATI-SAWITRI (1964):-

Lata Mangeshkar has sung all the songs of the film. Lata and Laxmikant-Pyarelal along with Pandit Bharat Vyas, who has written the songs, have done their best to give real “Class”. All the words in each of the songs have a special meaning in it. The best use of “Raag Yaman Kalyan” and “Rag Kalawati”. The Cassets/CD of this film are still in demand. This mythological film is remembered only because of its “EVERFRESH” music.

--Jeevan Dor Tumhi Sang Bandhi.... Lata Mangeshkar
--Tum Gagan Ke Chandram Ho.... Lata Mangeshkar-Mannade
--Kabhi To Miloge Jeevan Sathi,.... Lata Mangeshkar
--Sakhiri Pee Ka Naam Na Puchho.... Lata Mangeshkar
--Itani Jaldi Kya Hai Gori Sajan Ke..... Lata-Usha

LUTERA (1965)

This B Grade, non star cast “King Queen” film, was Raj Kumar Kohli’s first film. The film was super hit. The credit once again goes to LP’s super hit music. Lata sang all the songs and all are hit and can be herd even today.

-- Kisi Ko Pata Na Chale Baat Ka.... Lata Mangeshkar
-- Raat Se Kaho Ruke Jara.... Lata Mangeshkar ( Caberet Song)
-- Sanam Raah Bhule Yahan..... Lata Mangeshkar
-- Nind Nigahon Se Kho Jaati Hai.... Lata Mangeshkar
-- O Dilwalo Saje Dil Pe Zumo .... Lata Mangeshkar ( Caberet Song)
-- Muze Dekhiye Main Koi Dastaan Hoon..... Lata Mangeshkar

FARZ (1967)

The film was smash hit. This was LaxmikantPyarelal’s first “Golden Jubilee” Hit film. It was yet another non-star cast film from south. This was the second film of Jeetendra and Babita. This film has made Jeetendra a “STAR”. The “Super Hit” music of this film was solely responsible for the success. The songs of the films are popular even today.

-- Mast Baharonka Main Aashiq….... Mohammad Rafi
-- Hum To Tere Aashiq Hai ... Lata Mangeshkar-Mukesh
-- Bar Bar Din Ye Aaye …. .... Mohammad Rafi
-- Tumse Ho Haseena Kabhi.... Mohammad Rafi-Suman Kalyanpur
-- Dekho Dekho Ji Socho Ji ... Lata Mangeshkar

RAJA AUR RANK (1968)

Another “King-Queen”, non star cast film with teenage actors. But with super hit music of LP film celebrates Silver Jubilee.

-- O Phirkiwali Tu Kal Phir Aana … Mohammad Rafi
-- Mera Naam Hai Chameli .. Lata Mangeshkar
-- Tu Kitani Acchhi Hai O Maa … Lata Mangeshkar ( Best song on Maa )
-- Rang Basanti .. Lata Mangeshkar - Mohammad Rafi
-- Mere Raja Mere Lal … Asha Bhonsle

KHILONA (1970)

The film was super hit. Sanjeev Kumar and Mumtaz were considered as B Grade actors prior to the release of the film. But this film has opened the success for them. Powerful acting and LP’s music were fully responsible for success of the film. Who can forget the melodious songs like

-- Khilona Jaan Kar Tum To ……. Mohammad Rafi
-- Sanam Tu Bewafa Ke Naam ….. Lata Mangeshkar
-- Khush Rahe Tu Sada.. Mohammad Rafi
-- Main Sharabi Nahin …. Mohammad Rafi-Asha Bhonsle

JAL BIN MACHHALI NRITYA BIN BIJLI (1971)

This V. Shantaram classic, non-star cast film was hit only because of its music. Each and every song of the film has a unique composition. An outstanding music. It's best "CLASS" of Lata and LP.

-- Man Ki Pyas Mere Man Se … Lata Mangeshkar
-- Kajara Laga Ke Re Bindiya …. Lata Mangeshkar
-- O Mitawa O Mitwa … Lata Mangeshkar
-- Jo Main Chali Phir Na Milungi.. Lata Mangeshkar
-- Baat Hai Ek Bund Si.. Lata Mangeshakar-Mukesh
-- Taron Ne Sajake … Mukesh

BOBBY (1973)

Yet another non-star cast film (Rishi Kapoor and Dimple Kapadia’s first film). Not only star cast was new but also the male singers were new. Shailendra Sing and Narendra Chanchal was introduce to the film music by LP. Chancal won the Filmfare Award. Raj Kapoor was looking for a “Supper Hit Film” and he got it. Yet again the success of the film was carried away by LP’s music. The music of the film created a History.

-- Main Shayar To Nahin.. Shailendra Singh
-- Chabi Kho Jaye … Lata Mangeshkar-Shailendra Singh
-- Muze Kuchh Kehana Hai.. Lata Mangeshkar-Shailendra Singh
-- Main Maike Chali Jaungi Lata Mangeshkar-Shailendra Singh
-- Pyar Main Souda Nahin. Mannade-Shailendra Singh
-- Beshaq Mandi Masjid … Narendra Chanchal
-- Tut Ke Dil Ke Tukade… Lata Mangeshkar
-- Ai Fasa.. Lata Mangeshkar

EK DUJE KE LIYE (1981)

This was the first hindi film for Kamal Hasan and Rati Agnihotri. Yet another non-star cast musical block blaster, smash hit film. The films success again was carried away by the melodious music by LP. S. P. Balasubramanium was introduced to hindi film music. He won Filmfare as well as the national award for this film.

-- Tere Mere Beech.. Lata Mangeshkar-SP Balasubramanium
-- Hum Bane Tum Bane.. Lata Mangeshkar-SP Balasubramanium
-- Hum Tum Dono Jab .. Lata Mangeshkar-SP Balasubramanium
-- Mere Jeevan Saathi SP Balasubramanium -Chitra
-- Sola Baras Ki Bali Umar.. Lata Mangeshkar -Anup Jalota

HERO (1983)

Subhash Ghai had played the gamble by taking new hero and heroin (Jacky Shroff and Minakshee Sheshadri) for this film but at the same time firmly depend and believed on LP’s music. Yet another non-star cast film, which got success only because of the hit music. LP’s music was part of the film and once again the music became the “Real STAR” of the film. Excepting Lata’s one song, fairly new and un-popular singers sang all the songs. All the songs are still popular.

-- Pyar Karane Wale Kabhi.. Anuradha-Manahar
-- Ding Dong O Baby Sing Song..... Anuradha-Manahar
-- Tu Mera Janu Hai .. Anuradha-Manahar
-- Lambi Judai... Reshma (From Pakistan)
-- Nindiya Se Aayi Bahar... Lata Mangeshkar

SURSANGAM (1985)

This K.Vishwanath’s classic movie, again non star-cast, will be remembered forever due to its music. All the songs in this film are composed on pure Hindustani Clasical Ragas. Noted classical singer Rajan Mishra and Sajan Mishra along with Lata Mangeshkar, Suresh Wadkar etc have sung the songs.

--Jaaun Tore Charan Kamal ….. Rajan-Sajan Mishra-Lata Mangeshkar
--Maika Piya Bulaye.... Lata Mangeshkar-Suresh Wadkar
--Dhanya Bhag Sewa Ka.... Rajan-Sajan Mishra-Kavita Krishnamurthy
--Aye Sur Ke Panchhi Aaye.... Rajan-Sajan Mishra-Kavita Krishnamurthy
--He Shiv Shankar ...... Rajan-Sajan Mishra
--Aayo Prabhat.... Rajan-Sajan Mishra-Kavita Krishnamurthy
--Prabhu More Awagan ..... S. Janaki

The list getting bit long..Still there are few more non star cast films which were super hit because of LP's SUPER HIT music.

1) Merelal (1966).... Payal Ki zankar Raste Raste...by Lata Mangeshkar
2) Wapas (1968) ..... Ek Tera Saath Hamko Do Jahan Se.. Lata-Mohamad Raf
3) Nache Mayuri (1987)
4) Saudagar (1993)
5) Prem (1995)
6) Bhairavi (1998)

and many more..

"BINACA GEET MALA" and Music Directors Laxmikant-Pya relal's songs...

Laxmikant-Pyarelal have completely dominated the Weekly Countdown programme called “Binca Geet Mala”, the most popular, unbiased and famous musical radio programme of it’s time. It's first broadcast was in 1953 by Radio Ceylon and it's host was the inimitable Ameen Sayani. The Binaca Geet Mala ranked the most popular Bollywood film songs according to sales in select shops in select cities.

In the third quarter of 1963, LP’s first ever songs Hasta Hua Nurani Chehara form Parasmani hit the “Binaca Geet Mala”. After that LP’s songs were regularly and prominently aired on “Binaca Geet Mala”. There used to be sixteen songs in each of the weekly “Binaca Geet Mala” programme, more than half the numbers of the songs were of LP. There are certain weekly Binaca Geet Mala programmes in which more than 13 out of 16 songs of LP were broadcast when LP were on right on top of their carrier. BGM used to broadcast annual (Vasrshik ) programme giving the orders of the top 32 songs of every year. In this programme also LP were having upper hand. Not only that, on an average, there used to be at least more than 15 songs used to be of LP, that too about 50 % of the songs in between top to first ten positions. The Binaca Geet Mala records shows that Laxmikant-Pyarelal have completely dominated this musical programme.

Here is the list of the songs of LP which were on top position in that particular year.

1967 Milan:- Sawan Ka Mahina / Mukesh & Lata Mangeshkar
1968 Shagird:- Dil Bil Pyar Vyar / Lata Mangeshkar

Music Directors of the Millennium...LAXMIKANT-PYARELAL
When it comes to films, I feel that a particular movie is remembered for its songs. So much has been talked about the actor of the millennium, actress of the millennium but there has been no mention about the music directors of the millennium. My finger points at Laxmikant Pyarelal who have dominated film music since 1963-Parasmani down to 1998-Diwana Mastana. The duo has given some remarkable music and maintained consistency for 37 years, which is a feat in itself.

Laxmikant-Pyarelal have bagged as many as Seven filmfare awards ( including 4 times im a row..in the year 1977,1978,1979 & 1980) but they were capable of many more. Films like Sati Savitri, Sant Gyaneshwar, Aaye Din Baharke, Farz, Aaya Sawan Jhoomke, Mere Humdum Mere Dost, Do Raaste, Khilona, Intequam, Shor, Mera Gaon Mera Desh, Bobby, Daag, Roti Kapda aur Makaan, Aasha, Main Tulsi Tere Angan Ki, Ek Duje Ke Liye, Eeshwar, Utsav, Tejab, Sursangam, Khuda Gawah, Khalnayak etc deserved to win best music award, which they missed narrowly. There was hardly any year in which they were not nominated for the best music directors award.

The duo had a variety in their music whether it was classical, folk, westernised, disco, bhajan or mujraa. Most of the songs composed by them were simple, catchy, melodious and was liked by both masses and classes. Songs composed by the duo are so popular even today that they are rendered in marriages and functions by changing a few words here and there.

Laxmi-Pyare's music had a magic to the extent that even non-star cast films like Dosti, Sant Gyaneshwar, Lutera, Wapas, Farz, Bobby, Jal Bin Machli.., Ek Duje Ke Liye, Hero, Sur Sangam, Saudagar, etc.and many more became successful because of the good music. The duo, moreover, worked with many top notch producers like V. Shantaram, Raj Kapoor, Manoj Kumar, Yash Chopra, Raj Khosla, Manmohan Desai, K Vishwanath, Hrishikesh Mukherjee, Yash Johar, J. Om Prakash, Prasad Productions, Rajshri Films, Ramanand Sagar, Subhash Ghai, Shekhar Kapoor, Girish Karnad, Ramanand Sagar and David Dhawan and many more...

Though it is not easy to maintain consistency in this field,L-P were able to maintain the same for 37 years at a stretch. For this, no mere achievement, they could be named as the music directors of the millennium.

Laxmikant-Pyarelal has given the music for about 493 films. They have served the Indian Film Music from 1963 to 1998.
