The Paanans are a caste that belongs to the Odi cult, involved in what we would call "magical practices". The Paanans are experts, especially, at chanting mantras. Their chants contain the knowledge, their family has accumulated over generations. Every year, the Paanas are invited to conduct pujas or worship rites in several houses in the neighborhood. They travel there, often by foot, carrying their thoodi drum. By beginning the year with a puja, the people for whom the Paanans pray for, ensure themselves a year free of obstacles and bad luck. At the houses, the Paanans sing their family's songs, chanting their mantras and preparing the worship service. Their song is called Thugilunartha Pattu and are comprised of thousands of verses that can be sung for any kind of situation. If they go to a particular house to sing this song on one day of the year, then they will go and sing the same song in the same house on the same date of the next year. The flesh of the song will thus remain there, insuring prosperity for all members in the house. There will be one year of prosperity remaining in that house because of the song. To keep the prosperous life in that house, they go every year. The period they go to sing is before the harvest (July-August ). None of the Paanans will sing without a female voice. First the male sings one of the stanzas of the song, then the same stanza will be repeated by the females of the family..... MB

Some unsung heroes also remain. Va U Chidambaram Pillai, a brilliant layer, was inspired by the Swadeshi movement. He mobilized the support of local merchants, and launched the first indigenous Indian shipping enterprise, the Swadeshi Steam Navigation Company, thus earning for himself the name - "Kappalottiya Tamilan, “கப்பலோட்டிய தமிழன்". A man who had bought up two steamships a few years earlier was later could not afford to travel by anything more than a tram. He gave away all his material possessions for the sake of his motherland. Philanthropy. Thyagam…He spent an inordinate mount of time in prison in the British Raj. Ironically, he spent time in the Kannur (Kannanoor) prison in Kannore District, Keralam, where from Pazzhassi Raja hailed.

Kerala Varma Pazhassi Raja, popularly known as the Lion of Kerala, hailed from Padinjare Kovilakam (Western Temple [court] yard, hereditary house) and was the king of the Kottayam Royal family (near Thalasshery, Kannur District) of Malabar (northern Keralam) region of Keralam, during the last decades of the 18th century.

King Pazzhassi accomplished the title Veera (chivalrous, brave) when he was engaged in fighting guerilla warfare against British occupation with the able help of his loyal Kurinjiar tribe. Pazzhassi Raja revolted against the immoral, devious, crooked, unpopular and unjust revenue policy followed by the occupying foreign British India Company in Malabar. King Kattabomman protested against this—kisthi.

King Pazhassi stopped all collections of revenue. The Raja further threatened to cut down all the black pepper vines if the Company's staffers persisted in revenue collection. The British isolated Pazzhassi Raja (famous, devious and crooked strategy, divide and rule) the King from his Malabar supporters and took over Wyanad. King Pazhassi retreated to the woods with his wife and a few supporters… The British eventually suppressed the Pazhassi revolution at the turn of the century. The Raja committed suicide by swallowing his ring on the banks of Nullah. His death bought an end to the resistance movement in North Malabar.

In King Kattabomman’s case he was hanged, following a phony trial orchestrated by the British…
