The sun imparts energy for the whole universe. Energy is the substratum for everything. All planets revolve around the sun...heliocentric universe. Sun is considered as the "creator". Sunlight facilitates the generation of energy (by providing light consisting of photons that are used to split water [one of the five primordial elements (pancha-bhutas)], thus generating energy (releasing hydrogen), which is used to make food (carbohydrates - the processes of photosynthesis) by green plants, thus sustaining life in the grand scheme of things. “Naram” is water (consider the word, “NarayaNa”, one who is based on waters); life evolved in water (creation). Since the Sun directs the production of energy, as said above, it is considered as the "creator" (NarayaNa in a sense). Nature (the primordial elements) is worshiped as visible manifestation of "reality" - 'being", "sath". Or divinity (God)...

Chanting 108 times has a profound significance. Chanting is directed at the “Absolute” (consciousness), changeless reality in the universe. Adding, 1 plus zero plus 8 gives 9; the same is the case with 1,008 (astothra shatham = 1,008). Multiply 9 by any multiples of 9 (9, 18, 21 and so on); if you add up the final product you will end up with 9. The number, 9, thus, is changeless as is consciousness (“brahman”). Therefore, the number, 9, is considered to be a mystic number. Consciousness - changeless and attribute less (nirguna) - is called the “Absolute”, which can be conceived (and contemplated) as God.

Nice chanting with popular appeal... The chorus group, however, has an issue in correctly and clearly following certain words, as follows...The alphabet, "bh" in "bhur" and "bhargo", and "Na" (in "vareNyam" )...

The "Gayatri Mantra" is directed toward the Sun (Savitur), seeking the Sun to illumine and enlighten our intellect. Its appeal is universal, it is meant for all of humanity, and is not exclusively for any particular community, nation, creed, region or religion. The Sun is addresses as the mother. The name, Savitri, has its origin in "savitur". In her role as the protector, Gayatri is also denoted as Savitri. Gayatri, visalized as a Goddess, is considered to have domain over the five senses or “praNas” (pancha praNa), and protect these five life-forces of those who chant this mantra.

“Mantra” - Mantra—one that releases, frees the mind. MAN + TRA...Man = manana, mind. TRA=release.

Gayatri Mantra – The Universal Prayer
Om Bhur Buvah Suvaha
Tat Savitur VareNyam
Bhargo Devasya Dheemahi
Dhiyo Yona(h) Prachodayaat

Meaning: “Oh Mother, who subsists in all the three Kaalas (Time: Past, Present and Future), in all the three lokas (Lokas: Heaven, Earth and Lower Regions) and in all the three gunas (Gunas - Attributes: Sathwa, Rajas and Thamas), I pray to Thee, to illumine my intellect and dispel my ignorance just as the splendorous (effulgent, resplendent) sunlight dispels all darkness. I pray to Thee to make my intellect serene and bright and enlightened.” “Loka”(s) – Worlds; Heaven, Earth and the Lower Regions: Microscopic, macroscopic and nether...

We meditate upon the auspicious godly light of the Lord Sun; may that heavenly light
illumine our thought flow in our intellect. Mantra: MAN = mind (mana); TRA – release…To release the binding of the mind; to relax.

From Prashanthi Nilayam: The meaning of the Gayatri mantra is as follows: We contemplate the glory of light illuminating the three worlds: gross, subtle, and causal. I am that vivifying power, love, radiant illumination, and divine grace of universal intelligence. We pray for the divine light to illumine our minds.
