Agreed with your penetrating observation! Hilarious!! To wit...The aroma of piping – divine- coffee subdues the austerity of naadaswaram. Aah, the invigorating coffee! Its ingredient (caffeine) is a drug inasmuch as our bodies do not make it. Orthodoxy (orthodox individuals) adores this drug, being the soma or sura even before the morning ablution. Nevertheless, the target of naadam and of the drug is one and the same, the receiving sites in the brain (known as receptors in biology). Piping hot coffee and hot idli...Hmmmm...When the tummy is full then something would be offered to the ear (chevi, ear). The proverbial saying is : sevikku uNavu illadha podhu sattru vayiitirkkum eeyapedum. When the ears don’t get food then a little bit would also be granted to the stomach! As an aside, MS Subbulakshmi Amma, in an interview, says that she would have her coffee, first thing in the morning, after brushing; bathing comes thereafter...

“Nagaswaram is what makes the culture of the South special. From a long time ago to this day, although many instruments have been in vogue, only the Nagaswaram and its rhythmic twin, the Tavil, have been considered instruments of auspiciousness (mangala-vadyam), and only the music produced by them held to be auspicious. It is Nagaswaram music that has created a feeling for music among our people. The great poet Subramanya Bharati said Tamil thunders down the streets. Likewise, it is the Nagaswaram that is responsible for music filling the streets. Everyone, from the connoisseur to the layman is attracted by Nagaswaram music. ach part of the Nadaswaram is related to a deity. The bottom circle to Surya, the Sun God, the upper hole to Goddess Sakti, the inner holes to Lord Vishnu, the body to Lord Brahma, and the seven holes to seven mothers. The music emanating is related to Lord Siva. Such a Nadaswaram is also called "Periya Melam" and "Rajavadyam". – P.N. Sethuraman (Wind Instruments conference Series).

"Eminent nadaswaram vidwans had been pathfinders, epoch makers famous for raga elaboration- an art calling for a strict grasp of the grammar of that raga and a rich imagination (kalpana)". - Ganesan Nagasubramanian

There is an error in the conference article by S. Kasim and S. Babu (Wind Instruments conference Series). 15-Aug-2009. It is highlighted here in upper case: "When a raga is being EXPANSIVELY (not expensively!) portrayed in the alapana stage using this instrument, it takes both the artistes and the listeners into another realm beyond time and space.” - S. Kasim and S. Babu (Wind Instruments conference Series).

While musing, comments below (14-Aug-2009) appear to project too much optimism as to the current recognition of nadaswaram, and perhaps unrealistic expectation.

Nadaswaram: divine music; an exposition***********“Nadaswaram, is considered to be one of the most ancient and unique musical instruments of Tamilnadu. It would be appropriate to call this instrument a rare combination of music and divinity. Our predecessors considered temples as the abode of peace and sanctity. This system of holding the temples as the centre stage of our culture has prevailed for the last several centuries. Temples have nurtured several arts forms, the important ones being music and dance. Both these formed the basic essence of the bhakti tradition. The credit for such a rich tradition has to be given to the Azhwars and Nayanmars. The Tamil language and the patronage for music were interlinked during the ancient period. The temples in Tamilnadu have been the main inspiration and source of the bhakti tradition. Thus music played a special role as a medium for prayer. Musical celebrations were very popular and Nadaswaram acquired a special status in such presentations. Everyone in the temple precincts and the villages relished the music emanating from Nadaswaram. Thus this instrument became an integral part of temple celebrations throughout south India. Each part of the Nadaswaram is related to a deity.

Nadaswaram, divine music...mangala vAdyam...“Nagaswaram is what makes the culture of the South special. The speciality of classical Carnatic music is that it is manodharma music, or music of the imagination. This in fact is the high point, the apogee, of our music. The credit for fostering this manodharma aspect belongs entirely to Nagaswaram music. Nagaswara vidwans have nourished this music by literally pledging their very breath to it, and they are still doing so. Raga Alapana has been, and still is, a special feature of Nagaswarma music. There is room for the most expensive raga alapanas only in this. When a raga is being expensively portrayed in the alapana stage using this instrument, it takes both the artistes and the listeners into another realm beyond time and space.” - S. Kasim and S. Babu (Wind Instruments conference Series).

Comment for song Marukelara of album 'Gajavadana' by T ChithanPosted:14 Aug,2009
amazingly beautiful and perpetually pleasing...what a moving, soul stirring performance...listening to this music elevates one's consciousness...beautiful rendering...this instrument is mangala (auspiciousness) vadyam (organ/instrument)...no occasion is complete without this instrument; any auspicious occasion commences with this grand instrument...it is gratifying to see that this instrumental music is being gradually restored to its majesty in the society after having succumbed to decline…after having been relegated to a tertiary or subordinate status in the society...
