Raga Dhanyasi

Pallavi

Yethanai kodi inbam vaithay
Iraiva, Iraiva, Iraiva

Charanam

1. Chithudan Achithinai inaithai-Angu
Cherum iym bhothathu viyanula chamaithay
Athanani ulagamum varna kalanchiya.
Maka pala pala nal azhagugal Chamithay

2. Mukthi yendru oru nilai chamythay - Angu,
Muzhudinayum unarum unaruv amaithai,
Bhakthi yendru oru nilai vaguthai,
Parama, Parama, Parama

English translation

Pallavi

How many billions of pleasures, have you made,
Oh God, Oh God, Oh God

Charanam

1. You joined the divine with the non divine,
And mixed the five elements and made this world,
And that word is a treasure of colours,
Which you made with several pretty, pretty things.

2. You made a stage called salvation and there,
Made the ability to know all things to be known,
You made a stage called devotion,
Oh primeval God, Oh primeval God, Oh primeval God.

Phenomenal, profoundly deep and preeminent song of Mahakavi Subramanya Bharathiyar...A signature song....

From Dr. C. R. Krishnamurti’s account:

"Finally, going through the Thamizh literature, one is amazed at the depth and breadth of the knowledge the scholars of the past possessed. The feeling that one has just scratched the surface of what has been done already becomes inevitable. No aspect of life has been left untouched or unadorned. Any one hailing from a Thamizh cultural background can therefore be proud of their literary heritage.”

"The literature of a country is a reflection of its people and their culture. Going through the literature which I was fortunate enough to access, I derived great pleasure in studying the various facets of our literary past. If I had succeeded in expressing my feelings in a manner which would give an incentive for others to go through the original texts in their spare time or as part of their curriculum, I would consider my job well done.”

Dr. C.R. Krishnamurti, Professor Emeritus, Department of Animal Physiology, Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

Sublime song! What a legacy that has been left behind is detailed here!
Sangam is a celebrated academy (learned assembly) of scholars that existed in the southern city of Madurai, the capital of the Pandiyan kingdom, in ancient Thamizhnadu. Myths hold that several miracles happened in Madurai. The first Thamizh sangam is considered to have existed some 10,000 years ago (BPE) or so. It is said to have submerged in the ocean. During these times paNN (similar to raagas, long before the institution of ragas) writing is considered to have evolved. It turns out that “raagas” originated in the ancient Thamizhnadu, in one of the Sangam periods, and were named as “kizhamais” (kizhamai means day; 7 kizhamais for 7 days)
