Abhang

Abhangs are devotional (“bhakthi”) hymns in Marathi language composed by the great saint poets of Maharashtra (in India). The word "Abhang" (A + Bhang) means unbreakable, pure or faultless. Abhang is usually sung in praise of the Hindu god Krishna, also known as Vithala and Vithoba.

It is a musical form in Marathi and most frequently sung in Maharashtra. Abhangs have since crossed the national borders and sung in Carnatic music concerts as well.
Here the main difference in Harathi and Abhang is that Harathi addresses the deity directly, whereas Abhang uses a third person and the devotee explains the greatness of the deity to the third person. Thus it more or less matches with our Jawalis like
Eg: Entha Sogasu Gade Vadu etc.
One more thing that the Jawalis, Padams and Ashtapadulu etc when they are analyzed in subtle characteristics, one will understand, that though they are considered to be court dances in praise of the king and considered to be sringara forms suitable for that purpose only, but actually the composers sung them with an an assumption that the deity is the Nayaka and the composer himself/herself is Nayika. What a beautiful perception.

The word Abhang represents "that which cannot be destroyed". It is synonymous to Namasankeerthanam in South India. Instruments like Pakawaj, Tabla, Tanpura and Taal play the supporting role for an Abhang-singer.
There are different styles of Abhangs. The most popular one is Varkari Sampradaya. Sant Tukaram and Sant Namdev's Abhang Gatha and Abhang Granth are some of the important texts of Varkari Sampradaya. The presiding deity is Panduraga Vithal.
