Ms. Latha, I am undeserving of what you said! I was simply passionate. That is all there is to it. Nevertheless I must thank you. It would not be civil otherwise. So thank you!!!
I am an ardent student of the Mahatma, and I get all charged up. Reading him is my daily meditation, pooja and suprabhatam…Well, Vishnosmaranam (remembering Vishnu) is the third step in the spiritual advancement of the individual, right? This individual, Gandhi Ji, is Vishnu, a true Vaishnava..
We in India may be losing it. In continents such as South America, not only have they erected Mahatma's statues but are also propagating his ideals and principles to advance social justice. During his life, the orthodox Hindus and the organized Hindu religion fought him tooth and nail, in general. There were underground movements that operated to obliterate, destroy him and his (and Vinobha Ji.s) mission of bringing social justice by confronting casteism head on…And, now he is gone. Very convenient. Nothing new.
Siddhartha Gautama,an Avatara Himself, was not for castes…After he left, there was a dark period in BHarat …Buddhism itself followed a degenerate paradigm. Hindu orthodoxy and organized religion felt threatened because of Buddhism, which was unifying, and against castes. Generally, Adi Shankara, the ultra orthodox monk, jnani and philosopher, who preached advaita, is credited with for driving Buddhism out of India (more about it later)…Shankara was not the the first to talk of non-duality though.

MOST IMPORTANTLY, THE SONG OF THE TRUE VAISHNAVITE, A MAN OF THE MILLENNIUM, THE MAHATMA, MOHANDAS KARAMCHNAD GANDHI.
Can we refresh our memory about a true Vaishnava? ONE THAT FEELS EMPATHY FOR THE WEAK, DESTITUTE, HELPLESS AND UNFORTUNATE IN THE SOCIETY. Mahatma Gandhi, a man of the millennium, and father of India.
This song is Mahatma Gandhi's favorite song, which he would sing every morning to begin his day. The meaning of the song attests to the idealized virtues of a true selfless being, a seeker. The lyrics highlight and illumine the characteristics of universal value associated with selflessness and EMPATHY (feeling what others feel)…Abiding and sublime values of a seeker, a Vaishnavite. The devotional song found quick popularity that it has been rendered into almost all Indian and many non-Indian languages.
One may know the meaning of the song in plain theory, might know to sing this song, and might also be proficient in academic discussions of his song. But to truly “understand” this is to become DIVINE.
EMPATHY…A VAISHNAVITE AND EMPATHY ARE SYNONYMOUS. Empathy -the action of understanding, being aware of, being sensitive to, and vicariously experiencing the feelings, thoughts, and experience of another.
Experienced or realized through imaginative or sympathetic participation in the experience of another.
EMPATHY –see HARIJAN and the MAHATMA below.
Who wrote this immortal song?
Narsinh Mehta, also known as Narsi Mehta or Narsi Bhagat (1414? – 1481?) was a poet-saint of Gujarat State (Mahatma’s native State), India. He has been distinguished as a devote, Bhakta, poet saint, and an exponent of devotional poetry of Sanatana Dharma (Hinduism). He is considered first among poets, aadi kavi, and especially revered in Gujarat. "Vaishnava Jan To Tene Re Kahiye..." is Mahatma’s favorite song and has become synonymous with him. This song occurs at the end in Lord Richard Attenborough’s movie, Gandhi, whose music was directed by Bharat Ratna Pandit Ravi Shankar.
THE SIN, CURSE, MORALLY INDIGNANT, BLIGHT, CANCER ON SANATANA DHARMA AND BHARAT : “UNTOUCHABILITY”
EMPATHY…
Most profound statement, sums up Vasihnava thought and ideal- IF HE WERE TO BE BORN AGAIN HE WOULD WISH TO TAKE BIRTH AS A HARIJAN…For, then only he could understand their trials and tribulations, pain, pangs of bigotry and discrimination and suffering, perpetrated by the sins of organized Hindu religion in general, and caste ridden Hindu society in particular…How more profound it could be. The Mahatma was inexorably moved by Thamizh writings. He usually wrote in his mother tongue Gujarati, followed by Hindi (Deva Nagiri script) Roman script, and Thamizh. He learned to read and write Thamizh.
He was moved by the dictum Dhikkattavarkku Deivame Thunai and wrote it in a visitor’s book one would think, in Thamizh, during one of the visits to Thamizh Nadu.
Vaishnavite… Renunciation, thyaga and austerity…VAISHNAVA- ascetic way of life, dressing only in a loincloth of hand woven cloth. Transformation occurred in Salem, Thamizhnadu after seeing farmers over there wearing only loincloth. From 9-yard Gujarati clothes to loincloth.
VAISHNAVA: RESPECT FOR DIFFERENT FAITHS: Gandhi studied the Bible, the Koran, and memorized the Bhagavad Gita. Was proficient in all the three.
“Eshwara Allah Tere Nam”
Strove to raise the status of untouchables, the caste whom no body cared. He gave them the name harijan, or "children of God", and founded the weekly paper Harijan, which was published in English and Hindi. In an attempt to persuade the orthodox Hindus to wipe out the "blight of untouchability", Gandhi undertook fast in the summer of 1933 for three weeks. Twenty persons supported him once during a Thamizhnadu visit to Chennai and other prominent cities, out of 20 million people!!! He had to confront odds and surmount challenges all the time. Organized Hindu religion and higher, privileges castes were always against him; fought him tooth and nail….They were concerned that he might wipe out the caste system in India and Hindu orthodoxy. The same scenario after the Buddha in India.
Dhikkattavarku Deivame Thunai…(for those without refuge God is the savior).
Shri Ramanujacharya was a devout Vaishnavite who understood the plight of “untouchables”, the oppressed people. He called them “Thiru kulathar”…Kulam of Lord Vishnu…

Dear baburadhu,
people who have a heart to appreciate music will appreciate even a cry of a baby..we can experiment with raagas or even compositions of great saints. but there are rules to be followed. the same raaga saaramathi has been used by sir ilayaraja in the song Mari Mari Ninne and paadariyen padippariyen (movie sindhubhairavi.)..the original marimari ninne by thyagaraja was in raagam kamboji, but Ilayaraja used raagam saaramathi and directed that song. it was appreciated..saaramathi is a raagam used where certain truths are to be highlighted. this song tells us the truth about life, about salvation..thats why saint thyagaraja swamy has composed this in saaramathi raagam..but on listening to the saramathi by bombay jayasree in this composition, I am so sorry to say, the bhava of the eternal truth is lost..this song is like a melody, or a duet..,the feel of the raagam is lost.,the feel of the lyrics is lost.,according to scriptures, thyagaraja swamy cried when he composed this song because he was desperate for salvation but he didnt know the way to attain it,..such a great song loses its splendour when sung in such ways,..for hardcore carnatic lovers---this song is not for you....
thanks..

DESCRIPTION OF THE LORD AS APRAMEYA, ANORANEEYAN and MAHATOMAHEEYAN…One of the most important and intriguing aspect of this classic, is the description of the Lord as APRAMEYA, ANORANEEYAN and MAHATOMAHEEYAN…This may be a central point. ANORANEEYAN and MAHATOMAHEEYAN ..minuter than the minutest and greater than the greatest. Thus, the SHRI KRISHNA represents the UNIVERSAL CONSCIOUSNESS (PARABRAHMAN). The word, anu, refers to atom; while anoraneeyan refers to what is even smaller than subatomic particles. This is under the domain of particle physics. The word, anu, seems to have been around in Thamizh, at least for 2,000 years or more. Some descriptions in Thamizh…”anuivait thuzhaithu” refer to splitting the atom!!!!!!!!!! Sub-atomic particles were not described until the 1900s’ by Max Plank, Albert Einstein, Wolfgang Pauli. It is mind boggling that Purandara Dasa delved deeply into these aspects. APRAMEYA: One that is beyond measurement. 'Aprameya', refers to transcendent and all-encompassing." Encompassing all forms, yet transcending all (all forms). One)..........He who has manifested as the immeasurable one...Yasoda is intrigued that she had a chance to play with such a personality. SRI PURADARA DASA IS KNOWN AS THE KARNATAKA SANGEETHA PRA-PITHAMAHA [FOUNDER OF KARUNATAKA (CARNATIC) CLASSICAL MUSIC]. PURANDARA DASA WAS BORN DURING THE TURN OF THE 15TH CENTURY PE (1400'S) IN PANDARAPURA IN KARNATAKA. (THYAGARAJA LIVED DURING THE 18TH CENTURY. THIS WAS THE GOLDEN AGE OF KANNADA LITERATURE TOO) UNDER THE MOST FAMOUS VIJAYANAGAR EMPEROR SRI KRISHNADEVA RAYA. THE INFLUENCE OF OF SRI PURANDARA ON CARNATIC MUSIC AND KANNADA LITERATURE IS BEYOND ANY MEASURE. HE VIRTUALLY STARTED THE BRANCH OF LITERATURE WHICH IS NOW KNOWN AS DASA SAHITHYA. Purandara Dasa is famous among the Haridasas of Karnataka, he was foremost among the talented Karnatic composers. He earned the well-deserved praise-'Among the devotees of Hari, Purandara Dasa is the greatest'(from his preceptor Sri Vyaasa Theertha). His works have earned the name 'Purandaropanishat'. Purandara Dasa’s original name was Srinivasa Nayaka. His guru, Sri Vyaasaraja bestowed the name of 'Purandara Vittala' on Srinivasa Nayaka. It is believed that Story goes that he has sung over 800,000 songs, only a fraction we know now about.. Karunataka (Karu+NADU+AKAM) and Karnataka/Kanada are also associated. KARUNAATAKA ISAI, became truncated (and crooked) to become Carnatic.. Karu Natu Akam, as I understand people of the core region of the South, or people who are of dark shade. This has been questioned on the ground that this classification as Karnaataka (Carnatic) people was instigated by the then masters, the British. As is well known, the British (British Raj) had ZERO tolerance for Indian names, and even changed KOCHI to Cochin (ironically, Kochi is much easier to say than Cochin). Karunataka also refers to Karnataka /Kannada nadu, one would guess, and then there is the concept that Kaveri akam, Kaveri Natu Akam, regions in the vicinity of Kaverippompattinam could have influenced the name Karunaataka. Kaverippompattinam was the great metropolis, a grand city of culture, art and dance under the regime of the Chola Kings in Tamilnadu.

This is definitely not a bollywood theme - Many musicians have deviated from the regular stream to offer the blend of pure carnatic in new way - i think one should not be biased with who gives rather appreciate what is given and how is it given

I think the comments were very biased - BJ had done this so well and the back ground is so fantastic - listen to this in the night with this song floating in air - will be able to appreciate

Great vocal and the vocal arrangements are superb. Wonderful rhythmic textures. Delicate atmosherics chording in the backround guiding the song's harmonic structure. It's really beautifully done. Not to mention the different lead intruments coming in and out. Wonderful.

I fully agree with both Thyagarajan Iyer and Sabarish. It is highly disgraceful and deploarable that such a highly revered Bombay Jayashree accepted this kind of pervert background music. It is not al all acceptable to Pure music lovers. Neither bhakti, bhava, or sphoorthi of sri Thyagaraja are given due importance when compared with background music.

A soulful kriti and another master piece of life truth... by the great saint.......... in raag Saaramati.. adi taal ............................................. Meaning:---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Is salvation attainable by anyone in this world, who has not realised the Self? Are you not, Lord, ever ready to vouchsafe your vision to those intensely yearning for it? Is Beatitude attainable by anyone who has not experienced the profound ecstacy of devotional music?............................................. The vital force praaNaa and anaala, fire, combine to generate praNava, the Omkaara (sound of Om). From that Omkaara, the seven musical notes emerge. To those who cannot intuitively perceive the mind of Shiva, who worships naada through the VeeNa, is salvation attainable?

One who is a vaishnav Knows the pain of others. Does good to others, esp. to those ones who are in misery. Does not let pride enter his mind…………. A Vaishnav, Tolerates and praises the entire world. Does not say bad things about anyone. Keeps his/her words, actions and thoughts pure. O Vaishnav, your mother is blessed (dhanya)…………………. A Vaishnav sees everything equally, rejects greed and avarice. Considers some one else's wife/daughter as his mother. The toungue may get tired, but will never speak lies. Does not even touch someone else's property………………….A Vaishnav does not succumb to worldly attachments. Who has devoted himself to stauch detachment to worldly pleasures. Who has been edicted to the elixir coming by the name of Ram. For whom all the religious sites are in the mind……………………….Who has no greed and deciet. Who has renounced lust of all types and anger. The Poet Narsi will like to see such a person. By who's virtue, the entire family gets salvation. Vaishnav Janatho……………………….

Its an excellent Thyagaraja krithi spoilt to perfection in this rendition by Mme. Jayashree and the background scorer. I couldnt sit through the complete song.... Mme. Jayashree has performed as if it is a Vaseegara...
